According to Dr. Douglas Hill, obesity researcher at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, artificially sweetened beverages to replace sugary drinks is a weight loss strategies are effective for the short term, but water is still a healthy choice. Another study led by Dr. Barry M Popkin, showed that weight loss of 5 percent was significantly higher in patients that reduce the consumption of caloric beverages.

Participants who consumed diet drinks tend to consume more calories after a three month trial. Drinkers tend to drink diet ate more desserts, sweeteners and bread as compared with water drinkers, while those who drank the water after a six month trial experienced a significant increase in glucose levels and lower diastolic blood pressure compared with those who drank diet drinks.

Besides having the ability to detoxify, water can also help weight loss process. According to the Rowett Research Institute, this is due to the effects of thermogenesis. Thermogenesis refers to heat or energy produced in the body during digestion, absorption and transport of nutrients. Researchers found that drinking 500 ml, or about 2 cups of water can increase metabolism by 30 percent. About 40 percent of the heating effect thermogenetic is produced from water with a temperature of 22-37 degrees Celsius.

However, water does not provide all the nutrients the body needs, so should eat balanced meals and exercise regularly for the long term, to obtain a healthy weight loss.
